Singer Donny Osmond recently spoke about his life-long friendship with Michael Jackson in a new interview with Life After 50 Magazine. He talked about the similarities he and Jackson shared as kids and about the last time they spoke on the phone. You can read part of that interview below.
LA50: You and Michael Jackson came upon the American music scene at the same time. You were both the front person of a brothers group. What are your thoughts about him?
Donny: We were considered contemporaries when we were in our teens. But then he totally left me in the dust and went on to superstardom. There was a point in time when he and I were neck-and-neck. We were always looking over the fence at one another – 'What’s Mike doing?' 'What’s Donnie doing?' It's funny, because the comparisons are amazing. "One Bad Apple," our first number-one record, was written for The Jackson Five. Mike once told me they had passed on that song because they pretty much had their album done with "I Want You Back" and "ABC." So we got that song, and I think it was three or four months later, we had the number-one hit with it. I remember one time, years later, I said to him: 'Okay Mike, I've got a story for you about your song "Ben." I told him that it had been written for me. He said: 'Get out of here.' And I told him how I had met the writer years later who told me he had written "Ben" for me, but we were out on tour and had to finish a movie so he said: 'Let’s just get Michael to sing it.' It became Michael's number-one solo record. He sang about a rat and I sang about a puppy. We would get together and would laugh our heads off at the comparisons of our families. He would always ask me about my mom, my brothers and how they were doing. Mike and I were both the seventh of nine children. He was the lead singer of The Jackson Five and I was the lead singer of The Osmonds. Our mothers' birthdays were the same day. His mom played clarinet, my mom played saxophone – it just goes on and on and on.
LA50: Were you and Michael close friends?
Donny: We kind of protected our relationship and I did especially during the last couple of years with all that's happened. Today, everybody's gotten on the bandwagon with their stories. But now that Mike is gone and Dr. Conrad Murray has been convicted and the headlines are over, I feel a bit better about coming out and telling some stories – like the last time we talked. He had called me – this is probably a year or more before his passing – and when I asked him where he was calling me from, he said he couldn’t tell me. I said: 'Come on, you're talking to me here, we’re buddies. Where are you?' He asked me to promise not to tell anyone where he was and then told me he had rented a big motor home and, with his kids, had driven to Phoenix and was in hiding. I asked him who he was hiding from and he said, 'Well, things are hitting the fan and there’s so much pressure.' I asked him if he would do me a favor – to get in his bus and drive up to Utah where he and his kids could stay with me. Nobody would know, and they could have a little normalcy in their life. He said he was going to take me up on it, but he never did.

La Toya Jackson Defended Father Joe For Launching MJ Tribute Perfumes. 24-02-'12
Michael’s sister La Toya has defended her father for launching his own tribute perfumes, insisting Michael would not have prevented his dad making money off his celebrity.
Joe Jackson teamed up with his business partner Franck Rouas and unveiled the fragrances Jackson Tribute and Jackson Legend last year.
La Toya has urged detractors to back off, reminding them that her ageing dad was the one who discovered Michael’s talent and turned him into a pop icon. During an appearance on The Wendy Williams Show, which aired in the United States on Friday (Feb. 24), she said, “We wouldn’t have a Michael if there wasn’t for Joseph Jackson. He gave Michael to us… He is wonderful, so when you say, ‘He’s Joe Jackson, he’s Michael Jackson’s father, how could he do this? That’s his father, that’s his son.”
La Toya admits she was unaware of her father’s attempts to sell the perfumes in a mall, but that shouldn’t deter Michael’s fans from purchasing a bottle. She added, “He did have a big opening (for the fragrances) and I guess the next day he decided to go out and sit there (at the mall kiosk). After all, come on, he’s 84 years old…
“Michael wouldn’t have minded at all… He really wouldn’t. He would say, ‘Go for it.’”
The tribute fragrances have not been sanctioned by Michael’s estate executors and Joe is facing legal action over the products from executives at Bravado, a firm which retains the commercial rights to sell products under Michael Jackson’s name.

Michael Jackson Estate Judge Approves Move To Sell Michael's House. 24-02-'12
The Michael Jackson Estate just got the ok from a judge to sell the Hayvenhurst mansion which Michael and the rest of the family called home for decades, and buy another home for Katherine and MJs kids.
But here's the thing. We've learned the Estate doesn't want to sell Hayvenhurst -- at least for now, because it's being extensively renovated. But the Estate now has the green light to proceed whenever it chooses.
And the judge made another order -- allowing the executors to put $30 million in the Jackson Family Trust for the benefit of Katherine, Michael's kids, and his charities.

The Future Of Captain EO. 23-02-'12
After Michael Jackson passed away in June of 2009, fans urged Disney to bring back the beloved film Captain EO to the theme parks, and Disney listened.
To the delight of thousands of fans both old and new, Disney brought the attraction, which first debuted back in 1987 and showcases two original songs by Jackson, back to Disneyland and its other parks around the world in 2010.
The 17-minute movie by executive producer George Lucas and director Francis Ford Coppola features the King of Pop in the staring role and when it returned following his death, fans flocked to Disney theme parks believing it's return would be a limited engagement. But at the time, Disney officials never declared an end date and they still haven't.
Thursday marks the two-year anniversary of its return and Disney has yet to announce when the attraction will depart and what will take it's place.
Last year, the Tokyo Disney Resort decided to keep Captain EO indefinitely. The movie also appears in Walt Disney World’s Epcot in Florida and at Disneyland Paris.
Currently, the OCRegister website is running a poll asking readers what attraction they would like to see replace Captain EO, and as of Tuesday afternoon over 2,000 had responded with the majority of people voting to keep Captain EO forever. That poll is still taking place and you can cast your vote by clicking here!

Prosecutors Want Michael Jackson Doctor Kept In Jail. 22-02-'12
Michael Jackson's doctor should not be freed pending an appeal of his involuntary manslaughter conviction because he is a flight risk and has shown no remorse for his part in the singer's death, prosecutors argued in court papers on Tuesday.
The attorneys said Dr. Conrad Murray, who is serving four years in jail, should be denied his bid for freedom at a Los Angeles court hearing set for Friday.
Prosecutors David Walgren and Deborah Brazil said there was "complete uncertainty" over whether Murray would remain in California or flee if allowed out on bail.
"Based on his failure to accept responsibility for the decisions he made, his complete lack of remorse and lack of insight into the danger of his criminally negligent conduct, he remains a danger to the community," they added.
Murray was held criminally negligent in the June 2009 death of the "Thriller" singer after admitting giving him the powerful anesthetic propofol and sedatives as a sleep aid. He did not testify at trial and denied culpability.
Murray asked in January to be released on bail or put under house arrest until his appeal is heard, saying that a hearing could take over a year.
The judge in the case will hear arguments from both sides on Friday.

Joe Jackson Wrongful Death Lawsuit Tossed Out Of Court. 22-02-'12
Joe Jackson screwed up by filing a Michael Jackson wrongful death lawsuit against AEG and Dr. Conrad Murray ... a judge has just ruled.
Joe filed his wrongful death lawsuit AFTER Katherine Jackson filed hers -- on her own behalf and on behalf of the kids.
It's unclear why Joe didn't try to join in Katherine's suit rather than filing a separate one on his own. It's possible Katherine didn't want him.
Whatever the reason, the judge said you can't have 2 suits that allege the exact same thing, and since Katherine filed first Joe loses.
Joe could now try to horn in on Katherine's legal action -- if she'll let him.

Claude Kelly Interview: Michael’s Song ‘Hold My Hand’ Was Originally Intended For Whitney Houston. 21-02-'12
Weeks before Whitney Houston’s death, Grammy-nominated songwriter Claude Kelly stopped by the Forbes headquarters in New York and shared his thoughts on mashups, Miley Cyrus, Notorious B.I.G. and the business of songwriting.
In the interview, he told a fascinating story about how a song he’d written called Hold My Hand ended up being one of Michael Jackson’s last recordings. Kelly had penned the tune with Akon, originally creating it with Whitney Houston in mind. In the end, Akon liked the song so much that he decided to record it himself rather than giving it to Houston.
In 2008, Akon found himself in the studio with Michael and decided to offer the song to The King of Pop as a duet. The two recorded the song together; a version would appear on Michael’s posthumous album, Michael.
Though the final product was a bit different than Kelly’s original tune, he was pleased with the end result.
“He’s my all-time favorite artist,” says Kelly of Jackson. “Hold My Hand didn’t go No. 1, it didn’t match Thriller, or anything else he’s done. But for me I can say I was one of the last people to have a song recorded by Michael Jackson. That’s good enough.”

STATEMENT From Estate: Tohme. 20-02-'12
Attorney Howard Weitzman released the following statement Sunday on behalf of the Estate of Michael Jackson:
The Estate of Michael Jackson filed claims against Tohme Tohme for misconduct that it determined occurred during the brief time he was associated with Michael as his personal manager as well as actions that took place after Michael passed away. We expect Mr. Tohme to file a lawsuit against the Estate. We believe the facts will show that Mr. Tohme’s claims are meritless and that Mr. Tohme engaged in wrongdoing with respect to Michael Jackson starting early in their relationship. The Petition filed summarizes our position and we will let this matter be litigated in the courts.

Michael Jackson's Ex-Manager The Estate Is Screwing Me. 18-02-'12
Michael Jackson's former manager has filed a lawsuit against the MJ Estate, claiming he saved Michael Jackson after the molestation trial and in return he's been stiffed to the tune of millions of dollars.
Tohme Tohme says he was Michael's Manager from 2008 until shortly before his death. Tohme claims he rehabilitated MJ both financially and personally after the trial, by coordinating media releases and shooting down false and malicious news stories about Michael.
Tohme says he saved Neverland by arranging refinancing, for which he was entitled to $2.3 million.
But the big thing -- Tohme takes credit for suggesting that MJ's final tour would be called, "This Is It." According to the suit, during a discussion with Michael and AEG, Tohme chimed in that Michael selling the name, "This Is It" in a "high-spirited tone" would be a smash.
In addition to the $2.3 mil, Tohme wants 15% of the money Michael made from July, 2008 until the present.
The Estate has already rejected Tohme's claim and even filed legal docs today, claiming Tohme took advantage of Michael and did nothing for him.

Michael Jackson Estate Claims MJ's Manager Royally Screwed Him. 17-02-'12
Michael Jackson's Estate is going after Tohme Tohme, MJ's former manager, claiming he fleeced the singer out of millions of dollars.
TMZ has obtained legal docs filed by the Estate, claiming Tohme got Michael to sign agreements that earned him a fortune for doing nothing.
According to the papers, Estate attorney Howard Weitzman claims Tohme got MJ to agree to pay him $35,000 a month plus expenses as a flat fee -- regardless of what work Tohme performed. On top of that, Tohme inked a deal that gave him 15% of any money Michael made.
And there's more ...Tohme introduced Michael to a lender that refinanced Neverland. In return, Tohme got Jackson to pay him $2.4 million -- just for the introduction. And Tohme got MJ to promise him 10% of any profits if the Ranch was sold.
Tohme also got MJ to agree to pay him $100,000 a month for the "This Is It" tour.
Estate lawyers are anticipating a lawsuit by Tohme against the estate for the money he claims he's owed, and the Estate wants to shut him down before a suit is filed.
The Estate is also asking for damages.
BTW, Michael fired Tohme 3 months before he died.

Jonathan Moffett Talks IMMORTAL In Hometown. 15-02-'12
World renowned drummer, Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett, returns to his hometown of New Orleans as the Cirque du Soleil's IMMORTAL World Tour makes a stop there.
Moffett, who got his start playing with the Jackson 5, has played with everyone from Cameo and Elton John to Lionel Ritchie and Madonna. But it's the King of Pop who holds a special place in his heart.
"I started my career 33 years ago with the Jackson's a month after I went to Los Angeles, so it was divine destiny," Moffett said. He continued, "For me it's like coming full circle, I started with Michael, he was like my little brother, I was with him for 30 years; more than half of his life, more than half of my life and it was very important that I was with him in the last night before he passed."
Of the IMMORTAL World Tour, Moffett said that it fulfills one of Jackson's long-time dreams.
"Michael was super excited about Cirque du Soliel and all the past 10 or 15 years he was trying to get something done with them. This is a way of accomplishing that, fulfilling his dream on this level of magnitude."
Sitting near the Municipal Auditorium where he first played in New Orleans as a professional with The Jackson 5, Moffett is excited to pay tribute to his friend.
"It is very much a privilege and very much an honor to be here, continue his music, continue his legacy and be part of the official, not look alike, but official tribute to him."

Janet Talks About Losing MJ In Interview. 15-02-'12
In a new interview with Anderson Cooper, Janet Jackson talks about her shock at learning about the death of Whitney Houston and about dealing with the pain of losing her brother, Michael.
Of Houston, Janet says, "I couldn't believe it. Immediately I started shaking; I was trying to text everyone that I knew to let them know and I was speechless. I could not believe it ... I still can't believe it when I hear them paying tribute to her on the radio. It's still such a shock to me. I don't want to believe it."
Janet knows all too well what the singer's family and loved ones are going through right now, after losing her brother nearly three years ago.
"It's very, very devastating and I pray for her and her family, even Bobby. I mean he's going through so much. They are all going through so much. The mother, it's very sad."
When asked if she had any advice to pass on to Whitney's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, Janet said, "It's a very, very tough time. Even though it's still a loss. I lost my brother, she lost her mother. There's still a difference, even though there's still a loss to a family, I don't know what that's like being so young. It was hard for me. It was very very difficult for me. I didn't want to accept it, it's very difficult. You have to come to terms at some point, you have to actually give it up to God and it sounds so mean but you have to move on you can't hold onto that because it can be very devastating. But you have to go on with life. You figure out a way to move on. It's always right here. There's never a day, not one day has gone by where I don't think about my brother and my other brothers and sisters say the same thing."

R.I.P. Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012). 12-02-'12
Michael and Whitney have been friends for many years. Her death Saturday afternoon in a Beverly Hills hotel room came hours before she was scheduled to appear at an annual pre-Grammy party that introduced her to the industry decades ago and was expected to honor the six-time Grammy winner. Whitney Houston’s last days were spent surrounded by family, catching up with old friends and doing a bit of what she was best known for: singing.
Whitney (48-years-old) had been making the rounds in the days before the event, appearing at rehearsals and offering advice to singers Monica and Brandy.
On Thursday, she appeared with fellow singer Kelly Price on stage at a Hollywood club, where she sang the hymn Yes, Jesus Loves Me to loud cheers.
Whitney Houston was the most awarded female artist of all time, according to Guinness World Records, with 2 Emmy Awards, 6 Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. She holds the all-time record for the most American Music Awards of any single artist and shares the record with Michael Jackson for the most AMA's ever won in a single year with 8 wins in 1994.
Rest in peace, dear Whitney and Michael.

Estate Executor John Branca Receives 2012 GRAMMY Service Award. 11-02-'11
Attorney John Branca has represented the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, the Doors, Fleetwood Mac and more. And he’s been involved in significant music business transactions, such as EMI’s acquisition of the Jobete publishing catalog of classic Motown and the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization’s sale to Imagem Music Group. But Branca’s most important professional relationship was with his client Michael Jackson. Branca was with Michael when he made virtually every key business decision during his career, including his purchase of the Beatles’ catalog, forming the Sony/ATV publishing joint venture with Sony Corp. and helping him refinance his debt. Since Michael’s death in 2009, Branca and John McClain have been the co-executors of his estate. So far, Branca has negotiated a deal with Sony Music Entertainment worth up to $250 million. He also oversees the Estate’s investment in Sony/ATV.
Branca, speaking to a room that included his firm’s lawyers, past honorees Joel Katz and Jay Cooper, and Kobalt’s Willard Ahdritz, focused on being driven by passion for music. A fan of Elvis Presley, the Doors, the Rolling Stones, Berry Gordy and the Beach Boys, he related two stories that greatly affected his career.
The first came when he was a second-year lawyer and had to help the Beach Boys decide whether to retain Steve Love as their manager. Mike Love and Al Jardine were pro; Carl and Dennis Wilson were against. Brian Wilson was asked to cast the deciding vote, but was “deep in slumber with his head down on a conference table,” Branca said. He improvised, asking Brian to knock once to keep Love, two to fire him. “Lo and behold, Brian knocked three times.” It became Branca’s job to get Love to resign.
And when Branca first became Michael Jackson’s lawyer, Michael called with a request that was of utmost urgency. “I got ready had my pen out and notebook out,” Branca related. Michael’s request? He needed his pinball machine fixed.
Branca thanked family members and related musical and sports experiences of his youth before bringing it back to the music industry of today. In a world in which more companies attempt to bring every element of a career under a single umbrella, Branca reasoned, “lawyers remains an independent voice in the life of an artist.”
“While we are experiencing blatant consolidation in the channels of distribution in the music business, where an artist’s manager, promoter, ticketing agency and merchandiser can be all under one corporate umbrella,” Mr. Branca said, alluding to Live Nation Entertainment, which owns Ticketmaster and manages hundreds of artists, “we lawyers remain an independent voice in the life of the artist to protect and where necessary defend that artist.”
He got a standing ovation.

Dr. Conrad Murray Jailmates With Michael Jackson's Ex Brother-in-Law. 07-02-'12
There are nearly 4,000 inmates at L.A. County Men's Jail, so imagine the coincidence that Dr. Conrad Murray is in a cell just feet away from Michael Jackson's former brother-in-law.
James DeBarge -- Janet Jackson's ex-husband -- is locked up after being arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and drug charges. DeBarge -- who was the lead singer of the wildly popular band, DeBarge -- has been placed in Administrative Segregation -- the place where famous inmates with security issues are housed.
Murray has been calling the Ad Segregation unit home since his conviction on manslaughter charges last November.
We're told they occasionally run into each other, most recently last Monday when they were each meeting with their respective lawyers in the visiting room.
DeBarge's lawyer, Spencer Vodnoy, tells TMZ ... the singer is "really upset" he's so close to Murray. DeBarge says even though he was married to Janet for less than a year back in '84, he thought of Michael as a brother.

Don Cornelius, Founder Of “Soul Train” Television Show Died At Age 75. 03-02-'12
Don Cornelius, the founder of the “Soul Train” television show, was found dead Wednesday, authorities said. He was 75. Cornelius was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Cornelius created a pilot for “Soul Train” using $400 of his own money, according to the website biography.com. The show was named after a promotional event he put together in 1969, the site said. Gladys Knight, who performed on the pilot of the show more than four decades ago, said Cornelius “opened up so many avenues for African-American artists.” In an interview with CNN Wednesday, Knight said he appeared in ill health when she saw him recently. “Last time I saw him, he was pretty sick,” Knight said. “He had lost a lot of weight, but he still had that thing about him.”
Cornelius began his career in broadcasting as part of WVON Radio in Chicago, which the Illinois General Assembly described in 2003 as “the first full-service, black-oriented music station in the city” as it congratulated the station on its 40th anniversary. It was during his WVON days that he found himself at a show where the Jackson 5 performed in the mid-1960s, according to Time magazine.
When a young Michael Jackson opened his mouth to sing, Cornelius recalled being blown away, he told Time after Michael’s death in 2009. “He’s only 4 feet tall, and you’re looking at a small person who can do anything he wanted to do onstage — with his feet or his voice,” Cornelius said. “To get to the level of people who can do that, you’re talking about James Brown as a performer. You’re talking about Aretha Franklin as a singer. Michael was like that as a kid. He did it all, within the framework of one package. Nobody else did that.”
Don Cornelius rest in peace and thank you for contributing to Michael’s legacy.

Joe Jackson must have been having an out-of-body experience Friday ... the man who played the role of marionette to one of the most successful musical groups ever spent the day hocking cheap perfume at a Las Vegas mall.
Joe was the special guest at the Julian Rouas Paris kiosk, which is hocking "Jackson Perfumes." A famous sketch of Michael Jackson looms large amidst the perfumes.
And the whole operation may be illegal.
As TMZ previously reported -- Bravado International -- which owns the trademark to all things Michael Jackson -- is suing Julian Rouas Paris, alleging the company never got permission to use Michael's name or image.
But that didn't stop Joe, although it appears he dozed off during the slow period.
The good news ... there's no line if you want an autograph.
