This Is It CD Album Cover'This Is It' Is # 1 Album In 17 Countries! 06-11-'09

“MICHAEL JACKSON’S THIS IS IT” made motion picture history as the highest grossing concert film of all time. And now, the two-disc album companion to the movie Michael Jackson’s This is It released by Sony Music’s Epic Records makes its first week debut in the #1 spot of the Billboard Top 200 album chart, as well as the Soundtrack album chart. U.S. sales of the album - which features new hit song “This is It” – totaled 373,100 units this week according to Nielsen Soundscan – this figure does not include significant sales from non-traditional retailers.

Sales figures from other parts of the world are still being tallied although the album did hit #1 in 16 other countries including Canada, Japan, France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Turkey, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the Middle East and Colombia and Top-3 in the UK, Australia, Argentina, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain. A simultaneous #1 album and a #1 documentary film has not happened since 1971 when the Rolling Stones did it with the album Sticky Fingers and movie Gimme Shelter.

Michael Jackson albums now occupy the top five spots of Billboard catalog album chart at #1, #3 and #4; his Number Ones album is this year’s best-selling overall album year to date as of this week. Throughout his career, Michael Jackson has spent a total of 51 weeks at #1 on the Billboard album chart. Only The Beatles and Elvis Presley have spent more weeks at the top. His last #1 was Invincible in 2001 although Thriller hit the top of the Billboard catalog album chart last October.

Disc one features the original album masters of some of Michael's biggest hits such as "Billie Jean," "Smooth Criminal," "Human Nature," and "Thriller" arranged in the same sequence as they appear in the film. The disc ends with two versions of "This Is It," the original and an orchestral version. Disc two offers fans a rare listen to the early demo versions of classics "She's Out Of My Life," "Wanna Be Startin'," "Somethin'," and "Beat It." This disc also features a recently discovered spoken word poem from Michael Jackson entitled "Planet Earth."

Michael Jackson's This Is It also includes a 36-page, commemorative booklet featuring exclusive photos of Michael from his last rehearsal.

This Is It CD Album Cover'This Is It' Album Hits No. 1 On Billboard 200. 05-11-'09

To the surprise of probably nobody, Michael Jackson's "This Is It" will debut atop the Billboard 200 albums chart released today (Nov. 4) with an eye-popping 373,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan -- the fifth-best sales week for an album in the U.S. this year.

The companion album to the musical documentary film of the same name is Jackson's sixth No. 1 on the tally and it arrives with his best sales frame for an album since 1995's "HIStory" started atop the Billboard 200 with 391,000 copies.

Jackson collected his first No. 1 with "Thriller" in 1983 and later notched toppers with "Bad," "Dangerous," "HIStory" and "Invincible." Earlier this year, Jackson also notched a No. 1 on the Top Comprehensive Albums and Top Pop Catalog Albums charts with the 2003 greatest hits set "Number Ones."

The "This Is It" film bowed with late-night showings on Tuesday, Oct. 27, before rolling out wide the following day. Through Monday, Nov. 2, the film had collected $36.9 million at the box office in the U.S. and Canada. It's already the second-highest grossing musical concert film in the U.S. and Canada behind "Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" ($65.3 million).

"This Is It" is one of five albums to arrive in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart this week. The second-best debut comes from a reunited Creed, which sees its "Full Circle" enter at No. 2 with 110,000 copies. It's the band's first studio release since way back in 2001, when its "Weathered" started at No. 1 with 887,000 in its first week.

MJ On Track For 6th Billboard # 1. 28-10-'09

As Michael Jackson's movie "This Is It" is about to open in theaters, the film's companion album of the same name is already doing brisk business.

Industry prognosticators suggest that the Epic Records set -- which was released on Monday, October 26 -- could shift 300,000 copies by week's end on Sunday (Nov. 1) night.

Depending on how much the movie's opening impacts the album's sales through the course of the week, the set could post a higher figure -- perhaps 350,000 copies.

With numbers like that, it would seem like Jackson will be a sure thing for the No. 1 slot next week on the Billboard 200 albums chart. If the King of Pop hits No. 1, it will mark his sixth chart-topper, following "Thriller," "Bad," "Dangerous," "HIStory" and "Invincible."

Jackson already owns the No. 1 selling album of the 2009 calendar year with "Number Ones" -- 2 million sold this year and counting. Additionally, his "Thriller" is the year's 11th best-seller (1.1 million) and "The Essential Michael Jackson" is the 15th biggest (986,000).

The "This Is It" album contains 14 studio recordings of Jackson's hits like "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" and two versions of the from-the-vaults title track, which plays over the film's end credits. It also includes three demo recordings and a spoken word poem titled "Planet Earth."

'This Is It' Will Be Release On Itunes. 15-10-09

"Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' album will indeed be available for sale on iTunes on Oct. 27," Epic Records Senior Vice President of Publicity Lois Najarian told Wired. "I don't have much more information to impart other than that right now, but suffice to say fans will be able to purchase it there."

However, Najarian went on to add that the two sides are "working on" an issue over the sale of individual tracks. The question remains as to whether Sony and the Jackson estate will allow individual tracks to be sold on iTunes, or if Apple will require the sale of the full album.

Earlier Wednesday, Digital Music News incorrectly reported that Michael Jackson's forthcoming album, "This Is It," would not be made for sale on iTunes when it is released on Oct. 26 overseas and Oct. 27 in North America. Sources allegedly said that Sony Music Entertainment and the Jackson estate only want digital sales of the album to come bundled, rather than offering the sale of individual tracks. The latter part may be true, but Najarian explicitly said the rumor of the album's absence from iTunes was "incorrect."

This Is It CD Album

Apple does have one format that by default requires the purchase of a full album: The new iTunes LP format, previously codenamed "Cocktail," was designed to spur sales of albums. In addition to the album, the format includes bonus content like photos and videos. It's possible that "This Is It" could be an iTunes LP format exclusive on the music store.

The two-disc compilation will coincide with the release of the feature film, "Michael Jackson's This Is It," which features a concert rehearsal filmed by the legendary artist shortly before his death. Jackson had planned a 50-date tour before he died of cardiac arrest in his Los Angeles home in June.

The album will include remastered versions of some of Jackson's biggest hits, including "Thriller" and "Beat It." Two version of the title track, "This Is It," are also included. It is a previously unreleased song originally recorded in 1983.

'This Is It' Rules U.K. Airplay. 14-10-'09

Michael Jackson's posthumous radio single "This Is It" (Sony Music Entertainment) is currently No. 1 on the U.K. Radio Airplay Chart (week to date) and given its performance to date is likely to top the final Airplay Chart on Sunday (Oct. 18), according to data from Nielsen Music Control.

In the 24 hours after the track went to radio at 5.00am BST on Monday (Oct. 12), it received 800 plays across Europe. It was only today (Oct. 13) that it emerged that the 'new' song actually originated from 1983 as a Jackson co-write with Paul Anka.

The U.K. Airplay Chart week runs from midnight at the beginning of Sunday to the end of Saturday (23:59), and even though "This Is It" hit radio on Monday morning it has still raced ahead of Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole's debut solo single "Fight For This Love" (Fascination/Polydor), based on data covering number of plays and stations' audience from Nielsen Music Control.

This Is It CD-Single Cover

Early support from national top 40 station BBC Radio 1, which played the song five times, has helped its cause, and it has also garnered several plays on U.K. commercial networks including Kiss 100 FM and Heart FM. It also had two plays in the first 24 hours on AC network BBC Radio 2, the most popular station in the U.K. with an audience reach of 13.4 million, according to official audience research body RAJAR.

The total of 800 plays across Europe in the first 24 hours includes strong support in Germany from stations such as Oldie 95 (16 plays) in Hamburg, Radio Hamburg (11 plays) and Energy Berlin (seven plays). It has also been aired in countries including Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Romania and Sweden.

MJ Returns To US Radio. 14-10-'09

Just as radio stations flooded their airwaves with Michael Jackson's music following his death June 25, signals across multiple formats are wasting no time playing his newly-released track, "This Is It."

Made available to radio as of midnight yesterday (Oct. 12), the song has received 900 plays on 402 stations, reaching an audience of 10.4 million, as of 11 a.m. ET today, according to Nielsen BDS.
In its first day of airplay, the song ranked as the 35th-most played current title on all stations monitored for the Billboard Hot 100. It placed at No. 15 out-of-the-box at R&B radio. The track has received almost two-thirds of its spins in morning drive (6-10 a.m.), radio's most heavily-listened-to daypart.

A spokesman for Epic Records says the song will not be released as a digital single. Instead, fans seeking to purchase the song will have to wait until Oct. 27, when Jackson's like-titled newest hits compilation is released. Since the release of "This Is It," details have emerged that the song was co-written by Paul Anka in 1983 and first recorded by Sa-Fire in 1991.

Response among radio programmers to the song has been almost universally positive.

"There's definitely a curiosity factor and a lasting emotional connection to Michael," says Brian Thomas, program director of CBS oldies WCBS-FM and adult contemporary WWFS (Fresh 102.7)/New York, both of which played the ballad yesterday.

"People want to like the record, and listener response has been favorable."

Mike Mullaney, assistant program director/music director at CBS adult top 40 WBMX (Mix 104.1)/Boston, says the song warranted immediate airplay on the station, though he cautions against its long-term appeal.

"This song is an event, no question. It's right in line with his adult contemporary hits of the '90s, with a nice melody. Everyone is going to want to hear it at least once.

"While it's nice, it's a dated sound, and not likely to excite the 12- to 24-year-old top 40 crowd that generally passes judgment as to whether a song is a 'real' hit.

"We'll ultimately look to our audience as to whether they want new Michael Jackson music, or just that great catalog of hits."

"This Is It" has received 40% of its plays at R&B radio, with top 40, adult contemporary and even rock stations sampling the song.

Kevin Gardner, program director of Cox adult R&B WCFB (Star 94)/Orlando, says the station is giving listeners the chance to win tickets to a screening of "This Is It" on the film's opening day.

"We know people miss Jackson and love his music. This song will do well on both mainstream R&B/hip-hop and adult R&B radio.

"Long live the King of Pop."

Paul Anka Claims 'This Is It' is a Rip-Off. 13-10-'09

If you think Michael Jackson's "This Is It" sounds familiar, it's because the song is a rip-off that was released nearly two decades ago by another artist ... and the man making this claim is none other than music legend Paul Anka.

Anka tells TMZ in 1983, he wrote a song with Jackson called "I Never Heard" -- and the demo of the song was recorded in Anka's studio in Carmel, CA. Anka says he took the tape to a studio in Hollywood to put the finishing touches on it for Anka's duets album, "Walk a Fine Line." Anka claims Jackson -- who was just blowing up at the time with "Thriller" -- got a big head and "stole the tapes" from the studio.

Anka tells us he called the lawyers who repped both he and Jackson -- ironically one of them was John Branca -- and threatened them with a lawsuit if he didn't get the tapes back. Anka got them back but insists Jackson made a copy of the tapes and used the track with his voice from "I Never Heard" -- and simply retitled it, "This Is It."

Anka gave "I Never Heard" to another artist -- Safire -- who recorded it in 1990.

We called Sony Music who released "This Is It" ... no comment so far.

Anka tells us he's talking with his lawyers about his legal options.

Paul Anka: Co-Writer of 'This Is It'? 12-10-'09

Michael Jackson's estate is acknowledging that Paul Anka co-wrote the pop singer's first posthumous single, "This Is It."

Anka said Monday Jackson's estate has moved quickly to resolve the situation, and he has been promised 50 percent of the song's profits.

Anka says he's satisfied with the outcome.

Michael Jackson's "This Is It" was released Monday on the singer's official website and sent to radio stations.

Paul Anka is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and actor best known for the songs he wrote for Buddy Holly, Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra as well as theme music for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

Michael Jackson New Single Set To Be Released? 15-09-'09

A secret Michael Jackson single is being produced... and set to be a huge hit.

Jackon recorded the song for release with his planner summer tour.

It was shelved after the 50-year-old singer's death in June but now producers in Los Angeles have remixed the vocals with an orchestral accompaniment.

A record label source said: "It sounds awesome. The size and scope of the orchestra hasn't been seen since Ray Charles recorded Georgia. Everyone expects a huge hit.

"But they're worried about it getting out - they've hired huge bodyguards to stand by the studio door."

The song will promote the Jackson documentary This Is It, in cinemas worldwide next month.
